The roman church of Feldbach

Remain of the roman times, the church of Feldbach is an important point of the Alsatian Roman Road across the Sundgau. Make a trip in history…

The building is made with limestone and is situated in the center of the Sundgau. The harmony and the sobriety of the edifice is typical of the roman style.

The church has a central nave and two aisles, the church has an absis and two little absises in the east part.

Thanks to many openings natural light gets into the church and you can admire the simply decorated pillar.

The chorus is vaulted, but you can see the peculiarity of the beams.

The simple decoration insiede the church consists of statues, low relieves and crosses.

In the year 1144 Frederic the first, count of Ferrette, asked for this construction.

Placed under the authority of the abbey of Cluny during the middle-age, it welcomed around 30 sisters in the ancient convent once situated by the actual neo-roman church tower (1909).

At the entrance of the choir it gave the burial places of the past counts.

After the English and Armagnac incursions in the 14th and 15th century, the church should be reconstructed. She’s today like in 1977.

Next to the church you will find historical and architectural explanations.

Temporary art exhibitions are regularly organised.
